The Miner's Cottage
The Miner's Cottage - Charters Towers Queensland Australia

The old Miner's Cottage building in Charters Towers, is a  typical example of a late 1800's workers cottage. These timber framed "inside/outside" homes were  a common sight in the early days of this historic gold "boom town". In fact many hundreds of these dwellings were constructed in the town between 1880 and 1920. The Miner's Cottage displays the characteristic architecture of that period and when the gold production slowed in the first part of the twentieth century, many of these quaint little houses were dismantled and transported to other parts of the region. Quite a few ended up in Townsville to the east, some went west to the inland towns of Pentland,  Hughenden, Richmond and beyond.
The Miner's Cottage (also known as O'Kanes cottage) is situated on its original site in the heritage precinct  of Charters Towers. It is now the home of the "Miner's Cottage Collection" a fascinating range of domestic and mining related artifacts that have been sourced from the local area.
Today, Charters Towers is a vibrant local community that prides itself on preserving its rich heritage.
The "One Square Mile" precinct originates  from the intersection of Gill and Mossman Streets. Where the Visitor Information Centre is located. The cottage is within easy walking distance from here and is situated not far from the impressive  Post Office building. Charters Towers is well endowed with many lovely old buildings which testify to the incredible wealth of gold that was bought to the surface from under the streets. Inside the Miner's Cottage Interpretive centre you can view the amazing network of shafts, drives and Underlies which criss-cross under the present day streetscape.
This museum is not your ordinary museum! Experienced guides take you on a private tour of the displays, personally explaining the exhibits. In addition there are video presentations that will provide a wide range of topics from the past and the future of the town.
The main focus of the enterprise is to provide an educational experience for people of all ages, and have a bit of fun in the process.......
To understand what I mean, you really have to come in and have a "Captain Cook". If you are lucky enough to strike a day when Tony's on duty, well, you may end up dancing a jig on YouTube!

If you miss a tour of this place you really haven't seen Charters Towers......................
